I signed up for Intercom and told them exactly what I wanted. Lead generation. Marketing campaigns. Email only. Small team. No existing tool.
Six questions. More than most products ask. Then it said "customizing your setup" and dropped me into a generic support checklist.
The get-started page says "AI-first customer support." I didn't say anything about support. The first step lists messenger, phone, WhatsApp, SMS, and social. I picked email.
Meanwhile, there's "Outbound" sitting right there in the sidebar. The thing I actually came for. But the onboarding doesn't know that, because it never used my answers.
Intercom asked more qualifying questions than any product I've reviewed in this series. And then gave me the same flow that everyone gets anyway. The questions feel like data collection for Intercom, not personalization for me.
If you're going to ask, use the answers. Otherwise you're just adding steps.
